In Spain, 5,000 people crowded San Sebastian's catholic cathedral on Tuesday (5 October) to attend the funeral of Senor Juan Maria de Araluce Villar, a member of the Council of Guipuzcoa, who was assassinated by Basque guerrillas the day before.

SYNOPSIS: Thousands more waited outside the cathedral as the Bishop of San Sebastian, Monsignor Argaya, conducted the funeral service. Inside the Bishop asked when the current wave of horror and violence would end. the Basque guerrilla organization, ETA, which is trying to set up an independent, socialist Basque state, has claimed responsibility for the killings.

Three policeman, who died with Senor Araluce when they ran into a machinegun ambush in the middle of San Sebastian, were buried the same day Two were buried in Madrid where thousands walked behind the coffins but there was no violence. However, as the mourners filed out of the cathedral in San Sebastian right wingers shouted, "Franco, Franco" -- in memory of Spain's late right-wing dictator -- and "Power to the Army". A group of about 300 of them then marched to the spot where Senor Araluce and the policeman were killed. There they sang right-wing songs and began to break up, it was joined by some 50 extremists who began smashing windows along the nearby central boulevard.

Later that night, right-wing youths ran riot in San Sebastian, ordering bars to close, often at pistol point. Several people were injured in the violence that followed.
