    The Nigerian "Academicals" stunned their Ghanaian counterparts with a long goal in the first leg of the annual friendly international soccer match played at the Lagos City Stadium on Sunday night (5 September).

    The "Academicals" gave an inspired performance, which will stand them in good stead for the return match in Accra soon. The Nigerian team kicked off with some purpose and played some brilliant attacking football. The game, watched by a large crowd, moved at a good pace with some fine moves from both sides. The only goal of the match came in the 26th minute of the second half when a handled ball gave Nigerian striker Emilio John the opportunity of slamming a chest-high penalty into the net.

    SYNOPSIS: A large crowd including Nigeria's Air Force Chief-of-Staff Colonel Ikwue, turn up at the Lagos City Stadium on Sunday night to watch the Nigerian "Academical play the first leg of their friendly international soccer fixtures against the Ghanaian counterparts. The Nigerians kicked off and went straight into the attack, displaying some fine passing. A early attempt at goal was foiled by Ghanaian goalkeeper Ahmed Babar, who was compared with the 'Black Stars' Dodo Ankrah for his safe handling of the ball under persistent pressure from the Nigerians.

    The Ghanaian team repeatedly thwarted attacks from the "Academicals", sometime dazzling the crowd with fierce tackles good defensive organisation. But the Nigerians realised the series was at stay on their home ground and continued to r??? the Ghanaian defence.

    The Ghanaians kicked off for the second half and settled down to play a safe ga??? -- hoping for a draw in the Lagos match and then another chance to beat the Nigerians on their home ground in Accra??? the second leg of the series of to be play soon.
