  • Description

THE JAPANESE TOWN OF MATSUSHIRO, 300 KILOMETRES (ABOUT 187 MILES) NORTHWEST OF TOKYO, SUFFERED 5,280 EARTH SHOCKS LAST FRIDAY, TO MAKE IT ONE OF THE WORLD'S 10ST QUAKE-PRONE AREAS.

OVER 100,000 EARTHQUAKES WERE RECORDED IN THE TOWN LAST YEAR BY THE SEISMOLOGICAL LABORATORY WHICH WAS SET UP THERE BY THE TOKYO UNIVERSITY. THE STATION IS CONSTANTLY RECORDING TREMORS, MOST OF WHICH DO NOT DO ANY DAMAGE.

THE EPICENTRE IS BELIEVED TO BE BENEATH MOUNT MINAKAMI, NEAR THE TOWN. ONCE UPON A TIME THOUSANDS OF TOURISTS VISITED MATSUSHIRO EVERY YEAR, BUT NOW THE ONLY VISITORS ARE THOSE HAVING CONNECTIONS WITH THE SEISMOLOGICAL STATION.
