Background: India and the Soviet Union each won a singles match on the opening day of their inter-zone Davis Cup semi-final at Poona, India, on friday (20 September).
India's top tennis player, Vijay Amritraj was below best form but managed a straight sets victory over Teimuraz Kakulia, with the final score 6-4, 11-9, 6-3. Alex Metreveli levelled the score with 6-4, 9-7, 6-3, win over Vijay's elder brother, Anand.
Vija's heavier service and greater all-court power played a large role in his win, and 14 double-faults by Kakulia helped seal the result of the game. Vijay dropped service only once - and that was when serving for the second set at 5-4.
Metreveli had trouble with his service, but still turned in the most impressive performance of the day. He dominated his match, with a fine forehand and excellent control of the ground strokes. Anand recovered in the second set, but was unable to break Metreveli's grasps on the match. His form disintegrated again in the third set, which he lost in 23 minutes.
The winners of the India-soviet Union semi-final are scheduled to play either Italy or South Africa to enter the final. However, both India and the Soviet Union have said they'll refuse to play South Africa, should they win their semi-final next month.
