  • Description

Senora Estela Martinez De Peron became interim President of Argentina on Saturday (29 June). She will hold the executive post until her husband, General Jaun Peron, recovers from a heart attack, according to Argentine Parliamentary sources.

She was sworn-in at the Presidential residence in the Beunos Aires suburb of Olivos in the presence of the Cabinet, other political leaders, and the Commanders of the Armed Forces.

Senora Peron took over the Presidency at her husband's request. She was already Vice President.

This Visnews Library film shows Senora Peron arriving in Rome Italy, at the start of a 12-day overseas mission - her first since becoming vice President.

At that time she left behind her a political crisis as her husband pressed ahead with his controversial economic policies. He had threatened to resign after only eight-months back in power. The Government had offered to resign, giving him a free hand to carry out his policies, but he had rejected this.

Her interim appointment made her the world first woman President and gained her entry into the exclusive ranks of woman heads of government. She is, in fact, the first woman head of government whose husband is still alive.

The 43-year-old Senora Peron joins such eminent female figures of politics as Mrs. Golda Meir - recently retired as Israeli Premier, Mrs. Indira Gandhi of India and Mrs. Sirimavo Bandaranaike of Sri Lanka.

During her recent visit to Europe, Senora Peron met government leaders in Italy, Switzerland and Spain.
