  • Description

Israel marked Yom Kippur -- the Day of Atonement -- on Wednesday (25 September) with its border forces on high alert to prevent any recurrence of last year's surprise Arab attack during which the Israelis suffered heavy causalities.

Throughout Tuesday (24 September) special parades were held by army units, while relatives and friends visited the graves of those killed during the last October War.

Israeli soldiers who took part in the war were decorated. The highlight of the day was a celebration at the Presidential Palace when a group of 74 soldiers was chosen to represent all sections of the armed forces. President Ephraim Katzir was present with Defence Minister Shimon Peres who spoke to the soldiers.

Mr. Peres said Israel faced last year nearly one million soldiers of II Arab armies and volunteers form other countries. He added they had more tanks than the Germans had in their assault on the U.S.S.R. in World War Two, and more aircraft then Britain had at that time.

This year, the Israelis have started a campaign to deter the Arabs from attacking them. This included air raids on guerrilla targets in South East Lebanon. However, military officials are not expecting any hostilities from the Arabs.

SYNOPSIS: It's been a year since the syrians and Egyptians launched a two-pronged attack on the Israelis during their annual celebration of Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. The attack took the Israelis by surprise and they suffered heavy casualties. Throughout Tuesday, parades and memorial services were held all over the country in remembrance of those killed. They were very much in the minds of the congregations in the synagogues on this "Day of Atonement."
For the whole nation, this is very much a time for prayer.

During the special parades held by all army units, soldiers who fought in the 1973 war were awarded campaign medals. But this year the Israeli military authorities are taking no chances of another surprise attack. They've already started a deterrent campaign with attacks on targets in southern Lebanon.

The medal presentations and Yom Kippur fasting went hand-in-hand with one of the highest ever alerts along all the country's borders.
