  • Description

A major new building intended for use as an important conference centre is nearing completion in Belgrade just 12 months after construction work started.

SYNOPSIS: The building has been put up in what the Yugoslavs say is a record time. Its first use will be to house the Conference for European Security and Co-operation scheduled to start on 15 June. More than 200 engineers co-operated in the design and construction of the building and over 2,000 workers were employed on it. The centre was financed by the City of Belgrade.

All the work is expected to be finished by the beginning of June. A feature of the building is its main hall which measures 260 feet (80 metres) wide by 740 feet (225 metres) long. The large hall can be divided into ten flexible halls as required. The building is situated in an area known as New Belgrade between the Rivers Danube and Sava. The area was a marsh up until 25 years ago. President Josip Tito recently visited the new centre which is situated near federal government buildings and the building of the Central Committee of the Yugoslav League of Communists.
