  • Description

A steampipe exploded on the 36th floor of a New York skyscraper on Wednesday (May 3) scalding four women and three man to death and injuring two others.

The building -- in the Wall Street financial district -- was evacuated after the blast, which sent high-pressure steam scorching through offices. The bodies of the victims were scattered across four offices, some of them extensively damaged.

A police spokesman said the victims died instantaneously and added that they died in the positions in which they were working when the blast occurred. The steam was several hundred degrees above boiling point.

Mayor John Lindsay, who toured the wrecked offices afterwards, ordered a full investigation of the accident by city fire and building authorities.
