The Americans are stepping up their supply of arms to South Vietnam to help Government troops who have suffered huge losses in men and equipment against the Communists in recent weeks.
A giant American Galaxy transport aircraft arrived at Saigon's Tan Son Nhut Airbase on Tuesday (1 April) with new artillery pieces and ammunition.
It was the first of a number of flights bringing in urgently needed equipment.
The aircraft, 80 meters long and weighing 150 tonnes, took in 14 new 105 mm howitzers and a number of orates of ammunition.
It had flown on a 17??? hour journey, non-stop from California.
A day earlier, in the centre of Saigon, the militant An Quang buddhist monks took to the streets for the first time in several years to protest about the new draft laws.
Among those leading the brief and orderly march was the venerable Trich Tri Quang, a head of the order.
Several hundred monks followed their high council out of the An Quang Pagoda, as police formed a barricade to block off bothof the street in front of the pagoda.
A police officer told the monks the Government was considering their opposition to the new draft rules, which enable seventeen years old to be called up, but he refused to let them pass.
After a brief conference the monks sat on the street and chanted prayers.
