Background: Brazil, the World Cup champions who'll be defending their title in Munich within a month, were booed off the ground after their final home game against Paraguay played in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday (12 May).

The home crowd of 95-thousand was unimpressed by their team's display in beating the visitors two-nil. The Brazil supporters expected more goals from their world champion team against Paraguay, the side which could not make the Munich finals. The first goal came in the seventh minute from a penalty, and the second in the 18th minute. After that the Paraguayan defence held the Brazilian forwards with ease. They stumbled over the ball, missed passes, shot wide and jostled each other in front of the Paraguayan goal for chances to score.

Fans who arrived with fire-crackers, bongo drums and confetti to give their side a colourful farewell took them home.

It reached the stage where the crowd found more enjoyment watching the French referee, Robert Wurt whose sprints downfield and high leaps drew applause.
