The Second Asian Badminton Invitation Championships began in Hong Kong with a colourful fanfare .......... and a good deal of confusion.
The confusion, arose when three teams, Pakistan, Nepal and the Philippines, failed to arrive in time for the match draw. Because of their non-arrival half of the preliminary round games resulted in walkovers. The Pakistani and Filipino teams did eventually land in Hong Kong but were forced to forfeit their first round matches.
However, the capacity crowd was treated to some first class badminton in the games that were played.
In the first round of the womens' doubles event, Japan's top pair, Mike Ikeda and Saori Kondoh, ........... seen here serving to Korea's Oh Yeon Han and Park Ok Young ........ proved that they were in an excellent position to take out the title. Japan won the game, 15-4, 15-1.
One of the best mens' double combinations in the world, Indonesia's Christian Hadinata and Ade Chandra, maintained their position of firm favourites for the doubles title by defeating the Chinese team, Luah Chin and Lin Shin Chuan, 15-9, 15-5.
But on several occasions the Chinese pair had the Indonesians in trouble with powerful forehand smashes. But the Indonesian team replied with delicate drop shots that the Chinese found impossible to return.
