  • Description

Following several days of mounting rumours, King Hussein of Jordan today (Wednesday) told a meeting of prominent Jordanians and Palestinians of his proposal for the formation of a new state to be called the United Arab Kingdom -- by turning the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan into a Federal State linking both banks of the River Jordan. The new state -- still under and overall central executive authority with the King as Supreme Head of State -- would be made up of two regions:
    1) The East Bank -- with Amman as Federal Capital; and 2) West Bank -- with Jerusalem as its regional Capital -- comprising the territory which has been under Israeli occupation since the 1967 war. Any other liberated Arab territories (such as the Gaze Strip, for instance), whose people wished to join the West Hank, would be permitted to do so.

Although Jordanians and Palestinians are reported to be pleased with the proposals -- first reactions from Israel indicate that the Israelis are not immediately prepared to give up control of the West Bank. However, the official Israeli reaction will not be known until tomorrow (Thursday) following an emergency meeting of the Knesset (Parliament), at which Prime Minister Golda Moir will give her response to King Hussein's proposals.
