Background: President Kenyatta inaugurated a new expansion of Kenya Breweries Ltd. worth more than 8 million pounds foundation stone in dollars) on Wednesday (July 29), when he laid the foundation stone in Nairobi of the Company's new Headquarters Building.
Kenya's Minister for Commerce and Industry Mr. Osogo, and Kenya Breweries Chairman Sir Michael Blundell were on hand to greet President Kenyatta hen he arrived at the Ruaraka premises. The Minister made a brief speech of welcome.
Sir Michael Blundell sketched the history of Kenya Breweries, a company which is by far the largest single private enterprise in East Africa, although only forty-eight years old. It has been a tremendous growth in the short time since independence in 1963, and now has a capital of 4 1/2 million pounds Sterling (12.6 million U.S. Dollars).
President Kenyatta said that the projected expansion would generate employment, and provide a boost to agricultural production and Government revenue. He praised Kenya Breweries for drawing on local resources for their raw materials, and employing local manpower and capital.
He also made special mention of the provision made by the company in workers' housing clinical and recreational facilities, kenya Breweries is building a housing estate of its own,with a view to easing the pressing demand for housing in the city.
President Kenyatta then with traditional ceremony laid the Foundation stone to the new extensions as imposing five storey office block. Finally he made a brief tour of the existing premises, in the company of the General Manager of the Ruaraka Brewery.
Kenya breweries is a wholly owned subsidiary East African Breweries. It has nearly 2000 people on its payroll, four breweries, a maltings, 18 depots and stock points, and 200 vehicles.
