  • Description

Thousands of Greek Cypriots observed a two-hour general stoppage of work throughout the island on Wednesday (19 February) in protest over the unilateral proclamation last week of a separate Turkish-Cypriot state.

The massive protest and peaceful picket parades in the main towns of the Greek-controlled region were timed to precede the United Nations Security Council debate on the situation created by the Turkish-Cypriot decision.

Groups of picketers, mainly refugee families, stood silently outside the embassies of the permanent members of the Security Council -- the United States, the United Kingdom, France, the Soviet Union and China.

They carried placards saying "Greek and Turkish Cypriots Can Live Together in Peace" and "All Refugees Back to Their Homes".

The protest was organised by a co-ordinating committee of the right-wing and Communist trade union confederations, civil servants, teachers and other professional organisations and the committee representing the 200,000 Greek-Cypriot refugees.
