  • Description

In South Korea, the chief suspects in the recent assassination of President Park Chung-Hee re-enacted the shooting under the gaze of officials investigating the murder. President Park was shot dead in a private restaurant on October the 26th.

SYNOPSIS: Kim Jae-Kyu -- former head of the South Korean Intelligence Agency -- is charged with having fired the fatal shots at the President. According to a government spokesman, Kim plotted the killing for nearly five months and President Park's chief secretary, Kim Kae-Won, was informed of the plan and tacitly approved it shortly before the assassination. The two men are among the thirty-three being held in connection with the shooting. Kim showed officials how he shot the President and an actor representing the former head of state slumped onto the restaurant table.

President Park's Security Chief, Cha Chi-Chol, an four bodyguards were also killed in the restaurant shoot-out. South Korean government officials claim Kim intended taking over the country after the assassination with the help of several military leaders. Since President Park's death, Choi Kyu-Hal has been acting Head of State, but on Monday (12 November) South Korean opposition leaders called for the immediate end of martial law, a revised constitution and the resignation of President Choi. Opposition leaders are calling on the government -- which is taking some steps towards liberalisation after eighteen years of increasingly authoritarian rule -- to hold free elections as soon as possible.
