  • Description

Heavy rains in the Kima Hills and higher parts of the Kajiado District of Kenya, have caused flooding in the lower areas of the Machakos District - particularly between Sultan Hamud and Mtito Ndi, where bridges have been washed away and roads made impassable. At Sultan Hamud itself, school children had to be sent home after the Mwatineni River burst its banks and washed away some of the school building - causing damage estimated at GBP 1,500 sterling (3,600 dollars).

The damage to road and bridges is also causing serious delays to traffic to the coast -- essential to the country's inland economy. In many places farms have been flooded and crops - such as bananas and wheat - have been lost.
