  • Description

There was good news on Tuesday (30 November) for Portugal's Socialist government which is struggling to overcome a grave economic crisis.

SYNOPSIS: Venezuelan President Carlos Andres Perez, who has been visiting Portugal, met newsmen in Lisbon with Portuguese Prime Minister Mario Soares and announced that Venezuela had agreed to supply Portugal with oil and give credit facilities to pay for it.

Senhor Perez would not say how much oil was involved or what its price would be, but he said that Venezuela was a member of OPEC - the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries -- and that OPEC was in favour of helping developing countries cope with possible price increases. Senhor Perez added that Venezuela considered Portugal to be in the process of development. Tuesday was the last day of the President's two day visit and his Foreign Minister Ramon Escovar Salom signed the agreement with Portuguese Foreign Minister Jose Medeiros Perreira. The Venezuelan President has also agreed to accept qualified Portuguese immigrants.

Venezuela already has 200,000 Portuguese living in the country but it is unlikely to take anything except skilled labour because Venezuela has an unemployment problem of its own.
