    President Idi Amin of Uganda told delegates to the Organisation for African Unity (OAU) on Friday (18 July) that must be prepared to fight to the last man in the struggle for southern Africa.

    Field-Marshal Amin was addressing the opening session of the OAU's Ministerial Council in Kampala. The Council is preparing the ground for the start of the Twelfth OAU summit, to open in the Ugandan capital on 28 July. It is expected that Field-Marshal Amin, as the conference host, will be elected OUA leader for the year.

    In his speech, President Amin described the policy of detonate in southern Africa as "deadly poison to the unity, fraternity and independence of African states", Delegations from Botswana, Mozambique, Tanzania and Zambia were absent from the address.

    While rejecting the word "detente", all four countries have had dealings with South Africa over the past few months aimed at obtaining black majority rule in Rhodesia. These moves were approved by an OAU conference in Tanzania last April.

    Mozambique became an OAU member earlier in the day, when delegates admitted the newly independent state along with cape Verde, Sao Tome and principe and the Comoro Islands....raising the group's memberships to 46.
