MOYNIHAN: "Oh to the contrary there was none of any kind. The reaction of the president I think is very clear in this letter which I have jus read, which was taken in to me in the Security Council meeting....it's a moving letter."
REPORTER: "What kind of reaction have you had from the American people regarding the stands you have taken on the...not only the Zionism issue but the other issues you have been campaigning for?"

MOYNIHAN: "We have been very emphatically supported in the mail and may I say that we have not ben abrasive intentionally, if we did it was not our desire. What we have been, I think the president said it, we have tried to be forceful, cogent and honest.... sometimes that just feels abrasive. I think that yes."
REPORTER: "The secretary of State has given you all the support (indistinct)is there any abrasiveness between you and him?"
MOYNIHAN: "We are old friends and colleagues. I have been is Ambassador as well as the President's, carrying out his policy as well the President's...."
REPORTER: "Mr. Ambassador (indistinct) of diplomacy but of New York, just to set the records straight...did you jump or were you pushed?"
MOYNIHAN: "I didn't necessarily jump...I certainly wasn't pushed. The time came when my leave was up and I asked the President if I might now go back to teaching and he said sure, yes."

Background: Mr. Daniel Patrick Moynihan tendered his resignation as the Untied States Ambassador to the United Nations on Monday (2 February) and it was accepted by President Ford "with deepest regret and reluctance".
Mr. Moynihan, aged 48, has been a controversial figure in international diplomacy and his resignation comes after only seven months in office at the United Nations. Less than one week ago he became embroiled in the latest controversy over his outspoken style which has set him against third world delegates at the United Nations.
According to Reuter the latest dispute arouse over the disclosure of a classified message Mr. Moynihan sent to U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and all Untied States Embassies in which he accused a faction in the State Department of undermining his work.
Mr. Moynihan has said that he intends to return to teaching at Harvard University and to write the books for which he has already accepted advances "and spent the money". He has denied reports that he is contemplating running for the U.S. Senate.
