Background: Mr. Daniel Patrick Moynihan tendered his resignation as the Untied States Ambassador to the United Nations on Monday (2 February) and it was accepted by President Ford "with deepest regret and reluctance".

Mr. Moynihan, aged 48, has been a controversial figure in international diplomacy and his resignation comes after only seven months in office at the United Nations. Less than one week ago he became embroiled in the latest controversy over his outspoken style which has set him against third world delegates at the United Nations.

According to Reuter the latest dispute arouse over the disclosure of a classified message Mr. Moynihan sent to U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and all Untied States Embassies in which he accused a faction in the State Department of undermining his work.

Mr. Moynihan has said that he intends to return to teaching at Harvard University and to write the books for which he has already accepted advances "and spent the money". He has denied reports that he is contemplating running for the U.S. Senate.
