  • Description

THREE OFFICIALS FROM THE REBEL REGIME IN RHODESIA ARRIVED IN LONDON TODAY (SUNDAY) FOR EXPLORATORY TALKS WITH THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT. THEY FLEW IN UNDER A SECURITY BLANKET AND WERE IMMEDIATELY WHISKED AWAY TO A SECRET DESTINATION.

THE THREE MEN ARE SIR CORNELIUS GREENFIELD, CHIEF ECONOMIC ADVISER TO MR. IAN SMITH, MR. GERALD CLARKE, SECRETARY TO THE REBEL CABINET, AND MR. STANLEY MORRIS, CHAIRMAN OF THE RHODESIAN PUBLIC SERVICES BOARD. TALKS ARE EXPECTED TO BEGIN TOMORROW.

AT THE AIRPORT, THEY IGNORED QUESTIONS FROM REPORTERS AS THEY WERE ESCORTED BY POLICE TO WAITING CARS. THE TALKS WILL BE INFORMAL AND WILL BE HELD ON "NEUTRAL" GROUND. THE RHODESIANS WILL TRY TO DETERMINE WITH BRITISH OFFICIALS WHETHER THERE IS A BASIS FOR NEGOTIATIONS ON THE RHODESIA PROBLEM BETWEEN LONDON AND SALISBURY.

BRITAIN SO FAR HAS NAMED TWO REPRESENTATIVES, BOTH OF WHOM HAVE BEEN IN SALISBURY RECENTLY. THEY ARE MR. OLIVER WRIGHT, SOON TO BE AMBASSADOR TO DENMARK AND FORMERLY PRIVATE SECRETARY TO MR. HAROLD WILSON, THE BRITISH PRIME MINISTER, AND MR. DUNCAN WATSON, A SENIOR OFFICIAL IN THE CENTRAL AFRICAN SECTION AT THE COMMONWEALTH RELATIONS OFFICE.

(MR. SMITH, THE REBEL RHODESIAN LEADER, HAS ASSURED HIS SUPPORTERS THAT HE WILL NOT GIVE UP THE INDEPENDENCE HE SEIZED LAST NOVEMBER, WHILE THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT HAS MADE IT CLEAR THAT IT WOULD NOT ACCEPT A FINAL SETTLEMENT WHICH CONDONED AN ILLEGAL ACT).

(IN STOCKHOLM TODAY, AFRICAN NATIONALISTS VOWED TO FIGHT TO THE BITTER END TO ACHIEVE DEMOCRATIC RULE IN RHODESIA AND FORCE MR. SMITH INTO UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER. "ANYTHING ELSE IS BETRAYAL AND TREACHERY," SAID MR. NELSON SAMKANGE, OF THE ZIMBABWE AFRICAN PEOPLE'S UNION (ZAPU), THE AFRICAN NATIONALIST ORGANISATION OUTLAWED IN RHODESIA. HIS REMARKS WERE IN A WRITTEN SPEECH DISTRIBUTED AT THE SOCIALIST INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS).
