  • Description

Mrs Helen Joseph, the first person to be placed under dusk-to-dawn arrest in South Africa more than eight years ago, was freed on Tuesday (8 June). No immediate reason was given when security police informed her of the decision at the hospital, where Mrs Joseph is recovering from an operation for breast cancer.

Mrs Joseph was placed under house arrest in October 1962 under South Africa's Suppression of Communism act.

This library film shows Mrs Joseph driven in a police car to her home, and gardening at home. I dates back to 1963. Since then, under South African law, she has not been allowed to give interviews to the press, nor be filmed.

Since then, Mrs Joseph left the house only to go to Church. No explanation was given for her release.
