    Background: KHARTOUM, SUDAN

Contingents of troops from Sudan's People's Armed Forces flew our of the capital Khartoum on December 31, 1982, to join Iraqi forces in the Gulf war against Iran. The departure was part of a plan by Sudanese President Jaafar Nimeiri to send 10,000 regular troops and civilian volunteers to serve in the war. The Sudanese army's Deputy Commander in Chief, General Abdul-Rahaman Hassan Sowar El Dahab, and other senior officers, were among thousands of well-wishes who saw the troops off at Khartoum Airport. Three batches of Sudanese volunteers have already left for Iraq since November, but this was the first time Sudan made public the dispatch of regular troops.
