  • Description

TENSION HAS EASED IN SANTO DOMINGO, CAPITAL OF THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC, BUT DISAGREEMENT CONTINUES BETWEEN THE PROVISIONAL GOVERNMENT OF DR. HECTOR GARCIA-CODOY AND MILITARY LEADERS.

SOME TWO THOUSAND AMERICAN TROOPS OCCUPIED THE FORMER "RESEL SECTOR" OF THE CITY ON TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY AFTER FIGHTING BROKE OUT BETWEEN ARMED CIVILIANS AND DOMINICAN TROOPS.

THE DISORDERS BEGAN WITH A MARCH BY ABOUT 100 CIVILIANS WAVING THE BLACK AND RED BANNER OF THE DOMINICAN POPULAR MOVEMENT, AND SHOUTING ANTI-AMERICAN SLOGANS.

WHEN VIOLENCE BROKE OUT, THE GOVERNMENT ASKED AMERICAN TROOPS UNDER THE ORGANISATION OF AMERICAN STATES TO MOVE INTO THE AREA AND RESTORE CIVIL ORDER.

AS DEMONSTRATIONS CONTINUED, CIVILIANS ARMED WITH REVOLVERS, STICKS AND STONES, INVADED THE OFFICE OF THE PUBLIC WORKS MINISTER AND SACKED IT, SAYING THEY WERE "SEARCHING FOR COMMUNISTS."
AFTER THE AMERICAN TROOPS STARTED PATROLS, HUNDREDS OF DOMINICANS ASSEMBLED IN THE STREETS AGAIN AND STAGED ANOTHER ANTI-AMERICAN DEMONSTRATION.

SEVERAL DEMONSTRATORS, INCLUDING A 19-YEAR-OLD GIRL, WERE ARRESTED BY POLICE.

MEANWHILE, THE SOCIAL CHRISTIAN REVOLUTIONARY PARTY, WHICH FINISHED THIRD IN THE 1962 ELECTION, CABLED THE WASHINGTON HEADQUARTERS OF THE ORGANISATION OF AMERICAN STATES, PROTESTING OCCUPATION OF THE FORMER L"REBEL SECTOR" OF SANTO DOMINGO BY UNITS OF THE INTER-AMERICAN PEACE FORCE.

PARTY PRESIDENT ANTONIO ROSARIO CLAIMED IN THE TELEGRAM THAT "PRESIDENT GARCIA-GODOY HAS NO AUTHORITY."
