  • Description

Panamanian opinion of Cuba and its leader Fidel Castro is sharply divided. This was obvious Jan 1 when anti-Castro demonstrators burned an effigy of the cuban leader in panama City, and the demonstration leader's car was attacked by Castro supporters as he left afterwards.

Leading light of the anti-Castro feeling in Panama is Luis Manuel Martinez, leader of the Cuban democratic Movement in Latin America. An exile from Cuba after being shot three times in Havana for his anti-Government agitations, Martinez broadcasts his opinions over a Panama City radio network. He is assisted by Goal Sagastume a former Cuban journalist.

On Jan 1, when the Santa Ana Plaza in a Panama City was filled with people leaving church, a straw-filled effigy of Fidel Castro was thrown before the church steps and set alight. A red flag bearing the hammer and sickle was then tossed into the flames.

Martinez was present at this demonstration, and as he left a group of Castro supporters swarmed around, but the arrival of the Panama National Guard broke up the demonstration without casualties.
