  • Description

Hundreds of thousands of Moslem pilgrims on their way to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, prayed at the tomb of Muhammad in Medina's Mosque of the Prophet on Friday (5 January).

This yearly pilgrimage is believed to have begun more than thirteen centuries age, when Muhammad, regarded by Moslems as the greatest prophet of Allah, returned to Mecca from exile in Medina.

Medina was the scene of the beginning of the Islam religion, for it was here that Muhammad emigrated when persecuted in Mecca. Preaching in Medina, Muhammad formed a small group of disciples and returned to Mecca in triumph.

The Mesque, built over Muhammad's grave, is the only important building in the city. Like Mecca, it is difficult to measure the population of Medina, as it is constantly swelled by the thousands of visiting pilgrims.

SYNOPSIS: Medina -- the city of the Apostle of God. Thousands of Moslem pilgrims en route to Mecca jammed the streets of the city last week trying to gain entry to the Mosque of the Prophet, the site where Muhammed was buried in 632 A.D. Medina was the scene of the beginning of the Islam religion, for it was here that Muhammad emigrated when persecuted in Mecca. Preaching in Medina, Muhammad formed a small group of disciples and returned to Mecca in triumph.

Today many Moslems, obliged to perform the pilgrimage to Mecca, stop at Medina and pray in the Mosque of the Prophet.

As at Mecca it is difficult to measure the population at Medina as it is constantly swelled by the thousands of visiting pilgrims. Moslems from countries throughout the world travel thousands of miles to Medina and Mecca to pay homage to Muhammad.

On the seventh day of Dhu'l-Hijjah, the twelfth month of the Moslem year, the pilgrims will enter Mecca wearing the Ihram, two white cloths signifying the equality of all in the eyes of Allah.
