Background: Dutch marine firefighting experts finally put out a blaze on a Greek oil tanker in the Gulf of Oman on January 12. The fire on the tanker, Assimi, broke out six days earlier during passage from Iran to Athens. The 32 crewmen were rescued by the Omani navy. After the vessel was abandoned further explosions occurred in the engine room and accommodation areas, causing thick smoke to billow out. Four tugs battled to save the 59,038-tonne tanker, which was half-submerged with its engine room flooded. The oil spillage was not believed to be substantial, and a spokesman said one tug had pumps available to take off the remainder of Assimi's cargo of Iranian crude oil. The tanker had been lying some 96 kilometres (60 miles ) north of Muscat, but sources in the Omani capital said there was no disruption to shipping in the area.
