    POLITICAL DIFFICULTIES WERE AVERTED WHEN EAST GERMAN SKATERS DECIDED TO STAY HOME AND CONCENTRATE ON PREPARING FOR THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS IN MOSCOW.

    ALL TRADITIONALLY STRONG SPEED SKATING NATIONS ENTERED, ALTHOUGH THE INDIVIDUAL CHAMPION, VIKTOR KOSICHKIN OF THE SOVIET UNION, DID NOT DEFEND HIS TITLE.HOWEVER ANOTHER RUSSIAN, ROBERT MERKULOV, WON THIS YEAR'S EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP WITH 188 POINTS, THE HIGHEST TOTAL.A HIGHLIGHT OF THE MEETING WAS HIS BATTLE WITH NORWEGIAN KNUT JOHANNESEN IN THE 10,000 METRES.JOHANNESEN WON WITH A TIME OF 16.57.

    SECOND PLACE IN THE CHAMPIONSHIPS WAS TAKEN BY A.KOUPRIANOFF OF FRANCE.IN AN EARLIER HEAT OF THE 10,000 METRES, THE THIRD PLACEGETTER IN THE CHAMPIONSHIPS, B.STENIN OF THE SOVIET UNION DEFEATED H.GRIFT OF HOLLAND.

    NORWAY HAS WON THE EUROPEAN SPEED SKATING CHAMPIONSHIP 27 TIMES; THE USSR 8, AND FINLAND 7.
