  • Description

SIXTY-TWO PEOPLE WERE KILLED AND NEARLY 100 INJURED IN THE WRECKAGE OF A PASSENGER TRAIN IN ITALY ON MAY 31. THE TRAIN WAS RAMMED AT SPEED BY 39-WAGON GOODS TRAIN AS IT STOOD IN THE STATION AT VOGHERA, BETWEEN MILAN AND GENOA.

MOST OF THE PASSENGERS WERE ITALIAN HOLIDAYMAKERS, GOING TO SPEND A DAY BY THE SEA. MAY 31 - ASCENSION DAY - WAS A PUBLIC HOLIDAY IN ITALY.

FIREMEN CUTTING THEIR WAY INTO THE METAL COACHES WERE JOINED BY HOSPITAL TEAMS WORKING BESIDE THE TRACK TO RELIEVE THE MORE HOPELESSLY TRAPPED. IT WAS EIGHT HOURS BEFORE THE FEW REMAINING PASSENGERS WERE REACHED, PINNED DOWN IN THE WRECKAGE OF THE REAR COACH OF THE TRAIN. SUPPLIES OF PLASMA WERE HURRIED IN AND AN APPEAL FOR MORE BLOOD-DONORS WENT OUT. ALMOST MIRACULOUSLY, IT TURNED-OUT THAT SOME OF THESE TRAPPED DEEP IN THE WRECKAGE WERE NOT TOO SERIOUSLY INJURED.

SHORTLY AFTER THE LAST OF THE INJURED WAS CARRIED AWAY, IT WAS ANNOUNCED THAT THE POLICE HAD ARRESTED THE DRIVER AND FIREMEN OF THE GOODS TRAIN. IT WAS REPORTED THAT THEY HAD PASSED A RED (STOP) SIGNAL.

THE CRASH WAS ITALY'S SECOND MAJOR TRAIN DISASTER SINCE LAST DECEMBER, WHEN THE REAR COACH OF A PASSENGER TRAIN PLUNGED INTO A RAVINE NEAR CATANZARO, SOUTHERN ITALY, KILLING 71 PEOPLE. ON MARCH 8, A TRAIN FILLED WITH SOUTHERN EMIGRANTS RAN OFF THE RAILS NEAR FAENZA, ITALY, KILLING 13 PEOPLE.
