A visit to the Tower of London was on the Saturday (9 June) schedule of Mr. Chi Peng-Fei, Foreign Minister of The People's Republic of China. Mr. Chi is on an official four-day visit to Britain.
Mr. Chi and his party, accompanied by Lord Balneil, British Secretary of State at the Foreign Office, went to the Tower of London by Thames Steamer from Charing Cross Pier, in the centre of London's Thames activity.
First the steamer took the party up-river, under Westminster Bridge in order that the visitors might see one of London's most famous views -- The Houses of Parliament from the water.
Then the boat turned downstream and headed for the Tower of London - a trip past many famous landmarks, amongst them Tower Bridge, first passing under the new London Bridge.
Mr. Chi was greeted at the historic Tower by a Beefeater and then shown around the centuries old walled fortress which houses the Crown Jewels. Mr. Chi, after leaving the Tower, had tea on board the Thames steamer with Lord Balneil.
Later in the day Mr. Chi visited Fairford in the West of England where he saw the Anglo-French supersonic Jetliner Concorde perform a demonstration flight.
