    An advance guard of Royal Marine Commandos and their families arrived in Malta on Monday (28 June), as NATO anxiety mounted over the organization's future role on the island. the 87 commandos that arrived on Monday are part of a 900-strong marine force that is replacing a battalion on the island.

    The new Maltese government of Prime Minister Dom Mintoff, has announced his intention to secure a new defence agreement with Britain, although the present agreement is not due to expire for three years. Under the present arrangement, Malta receives 51 million pounds sterling in loans and grants, while Britain keeps army, navy and air force units on the island. Mr Mintoff is expected to ask for more money and an inclusion in the new agreement that British bases on the island cannot be used automatically by the NATO allies.
