    Background: AT LEAST TWO PEOPLE WERE KILLED AND 37 INJURED IN HONG KONG TODAY WHEN A TERRITORY BOMB EXPLODED IN A BUSY STREET. THE BLAST WAS THE WORST INCIDENT SINCE THE EXPLOSION ON SUNDAY WHICH KILLED A BRITISH POLICE INSPECTOR WHO WAS DEALING WITH A SERIES OF BOMBS PLANTED IN THE COLONY.

    TODAY'S BOMB WENT OFF AT A MAIN ROAD JUNCTION IN THE CROWDED MONGKOK DISTRICT OF KOWLOON AS A POLICE PATROL CRUISED BY IN LORRIES AND LANDOVERS. SEVERAL OF THE POLICEMEN WERE AMONG THE INJURED.

    THE BLAST COINCIDED WITH THE FUNERAL TODAY OF POLICE INSPECTOR RONALD J. MCEWEN, WHO DIED ON SUNDAY, WHEN A BOMB HE WAS DEALING WITH EXPLODED WHILE STILL IN HIS HANDS. TWENTY-ONE OTHER PEOPLE WERE HURT, AND NEARBY PROPERTY WAS DAMAGED.

    THE BOMB WAS ONE OF SEVERAL PLANTED BY TERRORIST ON SUNDAY. MOST OF THEM WERE EXPLODED TWO OR THREE AT A TIME. BUT THE ONE WHICH KILLED INSPECTOR MCEWEN WAS STANDING ALONE ON A TRAM TRACK.
