    THE LAOTIAN CROWN PRINCE, VONG SAVANG, ARRIVED IN VIENTIANE FROM THE ROYAL CAPITAL OF LUANG PRABANG ON APRIL 24 FOR THE STATE FUNERAL OF THAO KOU ABHAY, FATHER OF GENERAL KOUPRASITH ABHAY, THE COUP LEADER.

    AT THE AIRPORT TO WELCOME THE CROWN PRINCE WERE THE NEUTRALIST PRIME MINISTER, PRINCE SOUVANNA PHOUMA, THE COUP LEADER, GENERAL KOUPRASITH ABHAY, AND SEVERAL OTHER DIGNITARIES.

    CROWN PRINCE VONG SAVANG, ELDEST SON OF KING SAVANG VATTHANA OF LAOS, AFTER REVIEWING A GUARD OF HONOUR, WAS GIVEN BOUQUETS OF FLOWERS BY LAOTIAN GIRLS.

    THE FUNERAL PROCESSION TO THE CREMATORIUM OF THAO KOU ABHAY ON APRIL 24 WAS A COLOURFUL ONE. AMONG THE MOURNERS WERE PRINCE SOUVANNA PHOUMA AND GENERAL PHOUMI NOSAVAN, LEADER OF THE RIGHTWING FACTION.

    THE ABHAY FAMILY IS ONE OF THE OLDEST AND MOST RESPECTED IN LAOS.

    THE GOLDEN URN CONTAINING THE REMAINS OF THAO KOU ABHAY, WHO DIED ON APRIL 6, WAS PLACED ON A HEARSE, WHICH MOVED SLOWLY THROUGH THE STREETS OF VIENTIANE TO THE MELANCHOLY WAIL OF FUNERAL HORNS AND DRUMS.

    THAO KOU ABHAY, WAS PRESIDENT OF THE KING'S COUNCIL FROM APRIL 1, 1949 TO APRIL 6, 1964 -- THE DAY OF HIS DEATH. IN ADDITION, HE WAS MINISTERS FOR EDUCATION, PUBLIC HEALTH AND SOCIAL ACTION. THE THREE POSTS HE HELD FROM 1948 TO 1949.

    BORN ON DECEMBER 7, 1892 IN KHONG, PROVINCE OF SITHANDONE, THAO KOU ABHAY, WAS EDUCATED BOTH IN SAIGON AND FRANCE AND BECAME PROFESSOR OF LAOTIAN LANGUAGE. HE ENTERED INTO THE GOVERNMENT ADMINISTRATION IN MAY 1916.

    MEANWHILE, THE UNITED STATES, FRENCH AND BRITISH EMBASSIES IN VIENTIANE WERE PREPARING TO EVACUATE THEIR WOMEN AND CHILDREN AS THE LAOTIAN POLITICAL SITUATION REMAINED UNSETTLED.

    TROOPS BELIEVED LOYAL TO GENERAL PHOUMI NOSAVAN, WERE SEEN BIVOUACKED OUTSIDE VIENTIANE ON A ROAD TO LUANG PRABANG. THEY WERE ESTIMATED AT ONE BATTALION.

    THE RIGHTWING MILITARY JUNTA WHICH SEIZED POWER ON SUNDAY, APRIL 19, REMAINED IN CONTROL OF GOVERNMENT MINISTRIES, THREE DAYS AFTER CLAIMING IT HAD RETURNED POWER TO NEUTRALIST PRINCE SOUVANNA PHOUMA.
