Background: A large military parade climaxed the celebrations in Katanga on November 24 marking the fifth anniversary of Congo Kinshasa's third republic, led by General Mobutu. The Katanga celebrations were part of nationwide festivities which lasted for five days.
The military parade in Katanga was held before the Governor of the Katanga Province, Mr. Engulu.
Katanga is one of the foremost copper mining regions in the world, and hundreds of mine workers attended the parade. The military parade included a display of modern armour and field weapons.
There was also a civilian section of the parade in which representatives of youth organisations and workers' groups participated.
