M. Moise Tshombe, self-styled President of the Katanga Province of the Congo Republic, recently flew?
M. Moise Tshombe, self-styled President of the Katanga Province of the Congo Republic, recently flew by helicopter from Elisabethville to Ste. Barbe to inspect his elite Gendarmerie and encourage the recently mobilized militia.
Officered by Belgians and European mercenaries, the wall equipped Gendarmerie contrasted sharply with the oddly assorted arms of the militia, who risked personal injury as they fired off ragged salvoes of greeting to M. Tshombe from weapons ranging from muzzle-loading muskets to modern rifles.
Accusing the UN Security Council of declaring war on the Congo, M. Tshombe Feb 21 announced mobilization of the Katanga population, black and white, and invited all Congolese leaders of whatever persuasion to a summit conference at Geneva, Switzerland, on March 6.
