IN EARLY SEPTEMBER, ON A REQUEST FROM THE CHAD PRESIDENT, FRENCH FORCES WERE CALLED IN TO HELP PUT DOWN TOUBOU REBELS. THE GOVERNMENT LATER SAID THAT 111 REBELS HAD BEEN KILLED, WOUNDED OR CAPTURED. IN ADDITION, SOME REBELS CAME OVER TO THE GOVERNMENT SIDE. THE SECURITY FORCES LOST ONE DEAD AND A DOZEN WOUNDED.

THERE ARE ABOUT 1,500 FRENCH TROOPS STATIONED IN CHAD, A LANDLOCKED COUNTRY SOUTH OF THE SAHARA WITH ABOUT THREE AND A HALF MILLION PEOPLE, MOST OF THEM IN THE MORE SETTLED SOUTHERN REGION.
