    THE FORMER WORLD CHAMPION'S LOLA BMW, WITH ONLY HALF OF THE 75 LAPS OF THE COURSE COMPLETED, WAS MORE THAN A LAP AHEAD OF THE REST OF THE FIELD. HIS FASTEST LAP OF THE 1.35-MILE (2.172 KM) CIRCUIT WAS CLOCKED AT 99.23 MILES-AN-HOUR (159.695 KM AN HOUR).

    JACKIE ICKX, THE YOUNG BELGIAN, DRIVING A MATRA-FORD, LED FOR THE FIRST FOUR LAPS BEFORE HE SPUN OFF AND GAVE SURTEES THE LEAD. IN THE FIRST HEAT, ICYX HAD BEATEN SURTEES INTO FIRST PLACE. BUT ICYX, COVERED IN MUD FROM LEAVING THE TRACK THREE MORE TIMES, NEVER GAVE UP, AND FINALLY MANAGED TO FINISH IN FOURTH PLACE.

    THE AUSTRALIAN FRANK GARDNER, DRIVING A REPCO-BRABHAM WAS SECOND, WHILE THE NEW ZEALANDER, BRUCE McLAREN, DRIVING HIS McLAREN-FORD, WAS THIRD.

    FIFTH MAN IN THE RACE WAS ALAN ROLLINSON, DRIVING COOPER-FORD.
