    SCOTS RALLY DRIVER ANDREW COWAN TODAY (TUESDAY) WON THE GBP10,000 FIRST PRIZE IN THE LONDON-SYDNEY CAR MARATHON. COWAN, DRIVING A HILLMAN HUNTER, WAS LYING SECOND WHEN BELGIAN LUCIAN BIANCHI CRASHED 100 MILES (160 KMS.) FROM THE FINISH.

    ANDREW COWAN, 31-YEARS-OLD, AND A FARMER FROM DUNS IN BERWICKSHIRE, HAD AS HIS CO-DRIVER HIS BROTHER-IN-LAW BRIAN COYLE. SCOTLAND'S BEST KNOWN RALLY TEAM, THEY HAVE BEEN DRIVING TOGETHER IN INTERNATIONAL EVENTS FOR FOUR SEASONS NOW. IN THE LAST TWO YEARS THEY WERE CLASS WINNERS IN THE MONTE CARLO RALLY. THE THIRD MEMBER OF THE WINNING TEAM WAS COLIN MALKIN. THEY LOST ONLY 50 POINTS.

    NINETY-EIGHT CARS STARTED IN THE 10,600 MILE (16,980 KM.) RALLY ON NOVEMBER 24. 76 OF THEM REACHED BOMBAY WHERE THEY SAILED TO PERTH FOR THE LAST 3,500-MILE (5,600 KM.) STAGE ACROSS SOUTHERN AUSTRALIA.

    THE ONLY OTHER ROOTES CAR IN THE RALLY, NO. 45 - A HILLMAN HUNTER, DRIVEN BY FLIGHT-LIEUTENANT D. CARRINGTON, ALSO FINISHED THE COURSE SUCCESSFULLY.
