OKOI ARIKPO, NIGERIAN COMMISSIONER FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS, TOLD THE PRESS CONFERENCE IN LONDON TODAY (SATURDAY) THAT THE RED CROSS COULD CONTINUE RELIEF OPERATIONS INTO THE COUNTRY UNDER A FEDERAL SYSTEM OF INSPECTION. "THERE IS A HOPEFUL SIGN THAT MISUNDERSTANDINGS WITH THE RED CROSS HAVE BEEN CLEARED UP." SAID THE COMMISSIONER.

    DR. ARIKPO WAS MET AT LONDON AIRPORT ON HIS ARRIVAL BY MR. MAURICE FOLEY, PARLIAMENTARY UNDERSECRETARY AT THE FOREIGN AND COMMONWEALTH OFFICE. LATER DR. ARIKPO HELD TALKS WITH FOREIGN AND COMMONWEALTH SECRETARY MICHAEL STEWART, MR. FOLEY, AND MR. EDWARD ENAHORO, DEPUTY PERMANENT SECRETARY TO THE NIGERIAN MINISTRY OF EXTERNAL AFFAIRS.

    DR. ARIKPO SAID THE RED CROSS COULD "BRING RELIEF IN LAGOS BY WHATEVER MEANS THEY WISH, WHILE IT WILL BE INSPECTED AND DIRECTED TO ANY AREA SPECIFIED BY THE FEDERAL AUTHORITIES".
