  • Description

Throughout Israel people have warned to be alert for sabotage attempts in protest against the Middle East summit meeting being held in the United States. The caution came as a number of bombs were discovered. In Jerusalem, a policeman was seriously injured as he was trying to defuse one of them.

SYNOPSIS: Security forces in Jerusalem have stepped up their operations They expect the wave of bombings to continue. In this explosion, an Israeli policeman trying to defuse the device lost his arms when it exploded.

The bomb had been attached to a lorry near a fuel depot. While sappers looked for clues, Rabbis removed the remains of the policeman's limbs. The blast came just hours before Prime Minister Menachem Begin was due to attend the Middle East peace summit in the United States.

Police said a passer-by was also injured in the blast which occurred on the road from Jerusalem to Bethlehem. About 20 devices have been found in Israel and Israeli-occupied territories in the last three weeks (to 5 September). Reuters reports that only a few have exploded.

The police connect the incidents with the summit meeting, where a crucial issue is the occupation of Jordan's West Bank, and the status of the Palestinians. Security checks and searches for possible terrorists are part of the measures to counter the planting of bombs.

A relatively small device damaged the rear of this tourist bus near the Damascus gate of the Old City, soon after the first explosion. It was empty when the blast occurred. the coach was being used to transport journalists attending an conference of travel writers. The explosions have occurred despite the greatly increased security measures.
