  • Description

Pope Paul VI and Orthodox Patriarch Athenagoras, spiritual leaders of 300 million Christians, met Sunday night with a symbolic "Kiss of Peace" setting a seal on a drive toward greater friendship and understanding between their two churches.

Before this, Pope Paul VI crossed the waters of the Jordan and triumphantly entered Jerusalem over strewn palm leaves on a holy pilgrimage.

He was almost mobbed by ecastic crowds who got out of police and military control. Thousands of pilgrims, nuns and monks waved palm leaf branches, reminiscent of Christ's entry on a donkey into the walled city almost 2,000 years ago.

The pontiff drove up to the gate of the walled city following historic drive from the desert capital of Amman. He had landed there in a silver jet transport after a light less than 3 hours and half hours from Rome.

Pope Paul was almost overcome with emotion on arriving at Jerusalem. The happy feelings which fill our heart as we enter this Holy City he said citing the Psalm of the bible.

Turning to the massed pilgrims, he continued "Come with us to follow in the footsteps of Christ.

The kiss came as Patriarch Athenagoras entered a reception room at the Roman Catholic Delegation on the Mount of Olives where Pontiff awaited him.

Later, they clasped hands, bent toward each other and exchanged the traditional embrace which to Christian means "We are brothers in faith".
