    Background: IT WAS ANNOUNCED TODAY (FRIDAY) THAT PRESIDENT KENNEDY'S PREMATURELY BORN SON, PATRICK BOUVIER, HAS DIED. THE TWO-DAY-OLD BABY DEVELOPED BREATHING DIFFICULTIES WHICH PROGRESSIVELY WORSENED. LAST NIGHT ITS CONDITION IMPROVED BUT THERE WAS A LATER RELAPSE.

    ON WEDNESDAY THE PRESIDENT FLEW TO OTIS AIR FORCE BASE HOSPITAL AT HYANNIS PORT, MASSACHUSETTS, WHEN NEWS WAS FLASHED TO HIM OF THE PREMATURE BIRTH. THERE AN EMERGENCY WARD HAD BEEN EQUIPPED FOR MRS. KENNEDY.

    HE VISITED HIS WIFE AND SON AND STAYED THE DAY THERE. THE SAME DAY AN AMBULANCE RACED THE INFANT TO A BOSTON CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL FOR SPECIALISED ATTENTION. THAT NIGHT PRESIDENT KENNEDY BOARDED A BOSTON-BOUND PLANE TO VISIT THE HOSPITAL.

    IT WAS A SOMBRE-FACED PRESIDENT WHO ENTERED THE HOSPITAL TO HEAR THE DOCTORS' REPORT: THE INFANT'S CONDITION WAS "SERIOUS AND A CAUSE FOR CONCERN". YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) HE MADE AN EARLY MORNING, HALF-HOUR CALL ON HIS AILING SON BEFORE FLYING BACK TO THE AIRFORCE BASE BY HELICOPTER. THERE MRS. KENNEDY IS RECOVERING.

    THE PRESIDENT LATER RETURNED TO BOSTON AND STAYED OVERNIGHT AT THE CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL. HE WAS AWAKENED WHEN THE INFANT'S CONDITION WORSENED AND WAS PRESENT WHEN IT DIED.
