  • Description

In Ethiopia, the anniversary of Russia's October 1917 Revolution was celebrated on Tuesday (25 October) for the first time.

SYNOPSIS: One of the highlights of the celebrations was a song and dance performance by artists at the Ethiopian National Theatre in the capital, Addis Ababa. A leading guest in the audience was Soviet Ambassador Anatoli Ratanov.

The Soviet Union has reaffirmed its support for Ethiopia's Marxist government headed by Lieutenant Colonel Mengistu Haile Mariam. The country is best by civil war long waged by a separatist movement in the north, and an invasion by regular and guerrilla Somali-backed forces in the south-east.

Ethiopia recently celebrated its own third anniversary of the revolution in which an obscure group of junior army officers deposed Emperor Haile Selassie and abolished the 2,000-year old Ethiopian monarchy. The Soviet Union has pledged its support in defending Ethiopia's revolution and territory.

Ambassador Ratanov told his audience that working classes throughout the world, including that of the Soviet Union, were "beside the revolutionary struggle of the Ethiopian working classes".

He said the 1917 October Revolution occupied a significant place in the struggle of the oppressed people of the world. Ethiopia's own revolution, he added, was "part and parcel" of this international movement, and heralded the establishment of a free, democratic and socialist country.
