SYNOPSIS: The People's republic of China does not have a great need for oil -- nearly all of the power and lighting for Chinese homes and factories is provided by coal. But this does not prevent the Republic's drilling teams form setting continually high standards. In the Taching oil-fields, this team -- number 1205 -- set a new world record in 1966 by drilling 329-thousand feet in one year. At the end of last year they again broke the world record by drilling a total of 400-thousand feet.

Inside their quarters, team members gain temporary respite form the harsh desert conditions of the oilfield. Now the are escaping the cold -- soon the summer will bring them heat, dust and sand. But even inside the work goes on. Instructors continually bring them up to date on new methods. They are shown how the right type of drill-head is matched to different formation of rock strata.

Team number 1205 has only been operating for a decade or so - but they have many centuries of experience to draw upon. Sixteen centuries ago, oil was found in China while drilling for salt. Seven hundred years ago the Chinese were already drilling down to 3-thousand feet. These dialling methods were described by Christian missionaries at the beginning of the last century -- and, through the missionaries' writings, were to influence the development of the science of drilling throughout the world. Teams such as the record-breaking number 1205 continue this tradition today, and with the help of these huge tractors pulling in unison, they move on in search of new riches beneath he rock.
