  • Description

Addressing a convention of the Israel Bonds organisation in Eilet, on the Gulf of Aqaba, on Monday (27 January), Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin stressed that while Israel was ready to pursue the paths of peace, the country must always be prepared for the outbreak of another war.

The Prime Minister's speech came after the Bonds organisation delegates had witnessed the formal inauguration of new oil storage installations in the southern port. The ceremony marked 25 years of fund-raising by the organisation.

Over half of Israel's domestic oil needs are provided by fields in the occupied Sinai peninsula. Accurate statistics concerning the import of oil into the country are not released for security reasons, although it is believed that most of the fuel is supplied by Iran.

Earlier this week an Israeli oil exploration team announced the possibility of a major strike near the town of Ramallah, in the occupied West Bank of the River Jordan.

Increased oil prices during 1974 placed a heavy strain on the Israeli economy, leading to severe recession at the end of the year. Control of the Sinai fields is at the end of the year. Control of the Sinai fields is particularly important in this respect and presents a considerable stumbling block in moves towards an Israeli-Egyptian detente.

Egypt has demanded that Israel withdraw from all territory occupied since 1967 as a pre-condition to the resumption of peace talks. In his speech on Monday, the Israeli Prime Minister made it clear that while Israel was prepared to give up much land, there was no question of a return to the pre-1967 war borders.
