  • Description

NORTH VIETNAMESE MUSICIAN LE THANH AN, WHO STUDIED AND TAUGHT MUSIC IN THE SOVIET UNION, DESCRIBED HIMSELF AS A VICTIM OF POLITICAL MANOEUVRING BETWEEN HANOI AND MOSCOW AT A SAIGON PRESS CONFERENCE ON FRIDAY (OCTOBER 31).

MR. LE TOLD THE CONFERENCE, ORGANISED BY THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE ARMY PSYCHOLOGICAL WARFARE DEPARTMENT, THAT HANOI HAD DEPRIVED HIM OF HIS NORTH VIETNAMESE CITIZENSHIP BECAUSE HE WAS CONSIDERED EXCESSIVELY PRO-RUSSIAN. AFTER 10 YEARS IN THE SOVIET UNION, HE HAD BEEN ALLOWED TO LEAVE THE COUNTRY, FIRST FOR WESTERN EUROPE, THEN FOR SOUTH VIETNAM.

THE HANOI GOVERNMENT SENT MR. LE TO STUDY MUSIC IN THE SOVIET UNION IN 1959. HE SAID THAT THE NORTH VIETNAMESE TRIED TO RECALL HIM IN 1962 BECAUSE OF HIS PRO-RUSSIAN LEANINGS.

"HANOI WAS PRO-CHINESE AND CONSIDERED ME VERY BADLY BECAUSE I WAS PRO-RUSSIAN", HE SAID. HE BELIEVED THAT HANOI STILL FAVOURED CHINA OVER THE SOVIET UNION -- THOUGH IT MAINTAINED FRIENDLY DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS WITH MOSCOW.

MR. LE REACHED SOUTH VIETNAM ON SEPTEMBER 3. HE HAD COME IN ORDER TO BE REUNITED WITH HIS MOTHER, SISTER AND THREE BROTHERS, WHO ARE ALREADY IN THE COUNTRY. IN SAIGON, HE HOPES TO TEACH AT THE CONSERVATORY OF MUSIC.
