  • Description

A scratch English team confounded the experts and won the coveted Aga Khan Challenge Trophy for international team jumping at the Dublin Horse Show, on Friday, August 8.

The team, taking part in the parade of riders, consisted of Mr. T. Charlesworth on Smoker Bob, Mrs. Banks on Earlarath Rambler, Mr. H. Smith on Farmer's Boy, and Mr. G. Hobbs on Royal Lord.

The cup was presented by the Begum Aga Khan at the request of the President, Mr. O'Kelly.

Five countries - the United States, Portugal, Ireland, England and France, the holders - took part in the event. America came second followed by Portugal, France and Ireland.

England's last-minute choice was more than justified when Harvey Smith jumped the first clear round on Farmer's Boy. And the warm-hearted Irish crowd was not mean in its praise of the English victory.

Watching the Begum presenting the cup was Prince Bernhardt of the Netherlands. The cup, presented by the late Aga Khan in 1954, can be won outright with three successive wins.

England could hold it permanently in 1960.
