  • Description

Sailing ships from all over the world, from the great square riggers to small sailing cutters, gathered off Bermuda on Wednesday (16 June). They were preparing for the final leg of the biggest ever tall ships race which leaves for Newport, Rhode Island in the Untied States.

SYNOPSIS: Ninety-three vessels are taking part in the Cutty Sark International Tall Ships Race.

The final leg starts on Sunday (20 June) and 3,500 crew members are taking part. The "Tovarisch", the Soviet Merchant Marine entry has 135 cadets as crew. She won overall honours in the earlier leg to the Canary Islands and the 1500 ton barque is a storing favourite to win on the final section. She and the other Soviet entry, the "Kruzenshtern", are two of the 18 great sailing ships in the race. The race is organised by the Sail Training Association of Great Britain.

The association says that never before have so many young people, from so many nations, been linked in such a massive effort to strengthen international relations through friendly rivalry at sea. The eventual have of the tall ships is New York. From there, they sail down the Hudson River on the Fourth of July, to mark the 200th anniversary of U.S. independence. They will be inspected by U.S. President Gerald Ford, before dispersing to various American ports, prior to returning home. The European ships will have one final race-from boston to their home ports, starting on the 15th of July. The current race started from the British port of Plymouth last month, when 36 ships from 14 nations crossed the starting line. But since then, the fleet has grown to almost 10 vessels.
