    WEST GERMANY: A BOEING C135 TRANSPORT AIRCRAFT LANDED AT THE RHINE MAIN MILITARY AIRPORT, FRANKFURT, JANUARY 16, CARRYING 72 MEN, MAINLY MILITARY POLICE, OF THE U.S.FOURTH INFANTRY DIVISION -THE ADVANCE PARTY OF SOME 6,000 COMBAT-READY TROOPS WHO WERE FLYING IN FROM THE UNITED STATES OVER THE NEXT 4 DAYS FOR THE ALLIED EXERCISE "LONG THRUST II".

    THEIR 5,160-MILE TRIP FROM McCHORD BASE IN NORTH-WEST AMERICA TOOK THE ADVANCE PARTY JUST 9 HOURS AND 35 MINUTES.

    THE EXERCISE, TAKING PLACE BETWEEN JANUARY 16 AND FEBRUARY 12, IN WEST GERMANY, IS DESIGNED TO TEST POSSIBILITIES OF DISPATCHING UNITED STATES REINFORCEMENTS TO EUROPE.THE TROOPS WILL BE PLACED UNDER THE COMMAND OF GENERAL NORSTAD, THE SUPREME ALLIED COMMANDER, AND THE EXERCISE WILL BE DIRECTED BY FRENCH GENERAL JACQUOT, WHO HOLDS THE CENTRAL EUROPE COMMAND.

    MORE THAN 100 TRANSPORT PLANES WERE CONVEYING THE MAIN PARTY - DIVIDED INTO THREE INFANTRY BATTLE GROUPS - FOR THE FOUR-WEEK EXERCISE WITH ALLIED TROOPS.

    WHEN OPERATION "LONG THRUST II" ENDS IN MID-FEBRUARY, TWO OF THE FOURTH DIVISION'S BATTLE GROUPS ARE TO REMAIN OVERSEAS TEMPORARILY FOR ADDITIONAL TRAINING AS RESERVE ELEMENTS OF THE UNITED STATES STRATEGIC ARMY COMMAND IN EUROPE.
