  • Description

Security measures have tightened in and around Dacca during the past two weeks following increased rebel activity. All checks and searches for arms and ammunition....carried out normally by the Razakars, a para-military force acting as a second line to the Pakistani police...have been intensified. Because this work is a military, and therefore security, operation correspondents have had few chances to obtain facts about the results and general situation. However across the river the Pakistan Army has been engaged in a military operation. Although film crews have not been permitted access to the region because of a curfew, there have been reports of speculation among villagers that casualties have been heavy. A nearby hospital has treated an increasing number of patients with gunshot wounds.

SYNOPSIS: Security measures, already tight in Dacca, have been tightened even further during the past 2 weeks because of rebel activity...checks and searches are even more thorough.

Searches are usually carried out by Razakars, members of the para-military force which acts as a second line to the police. They're particularly careful at bridges....a prime target for rebels.

There are plenty of targets....in one week rebels destroyed two jute warehouses, with their thousands of pounds worth of jute.

It's proved difficult for correspondents to establish the precise nature of the Dacca situation because it's been a military and the security operation.

On the other side of the river from Dacca a military operation has been going on. Film crews could not cross to film it because curfew had been imposed, and no ferry boats were allowed to run.

At night flames had been seen in the direction of Kati and Jangira villages. Villagers have been speculating that between 200 and 2,000 people may have lost their lives across the river.

At a nearby hospital, 31 gunshot-wound cases were admitted within two days....among them child victims of a terrorist bomb attack on a kindergarten class. According to the Pakistan Army, there are an estimated 2,000 rebels in Dacca, and another 30,000 throughout the country. A local Army Commander has said that out for Indian "interference" the situation in Dacca could be quite within a fortnight.....however the tension and incidents continue.
